Library Media Endorsement Courses

LIBR 130 – School Libraries

5 credits, offered winter quarter

In typical K-12 school library settings, the role of the librarian, emphasizing coordination of curricular and student needs, and reading motivation, and the teaching of information literacy skills.

LIBR 160 – Computers in Libraries

5 credits, offered spring quarter

An introduction to existing and emerging library-related technologies with a focus on effective use of catalogs, databases, and the Internet, integrated library systems, library websites, accessing and downloading various formats electronically, troubleshooting and assisting patrons. Attention is paid to the role that computers play in libraries and their impact as well as electronic communication, netiquette, security, ADA, working in networked environments, hardware and software, and developing technology fluency. Students will also learn to transfer from situation to situation, adapting to new technologies as they emerge.

LIBR 178 – Technical Services & Cataloging for Small Libraries

5 credits, offered fall quarter

A general introduction to technical services activities, procedures, tools, and systems in small libraries. Areas examined include ordering, receiving, processing, basic cataloging, and preserving library materials in a variety of formats. Focus is on customer-centered technical service practices; efficient management of materials requests; managing acquisitions and cataloging tools budgets; and using print and electronic tools for all aspects of technical services. Provides background for further studies in collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, and preservation.

LIBR 190 – Library Administration and Management

5 credits, offered summer quarter

In-depth examination of the principles of library program management, including the management of personnel, facilities, budgets, and services designed to meet the needs of users. Designed to meet the needs of School Librarians.

LIBR 195 – Collection Development

3 credits, offered summer quarter

Exploration of the principles and practices of library collection development in school and public libraries, including mission, policies, assessing user needs, selection tools, and principles such as intellectual freedom. Designed to meet the needs of School Librarians.

EDLR 5043 – Instructional Leadership as a School Library Media Specialist

This course is offered through Seattle Pacific University.

4 credits, offered fall quarter.

Computer prerequisites: Participants will need access to a computer with a connection to the Internet. They will also need to have access or install QuickTime, Flash, and Adobe Reader. Addresses the fundamentals of ethical, legal and social issues that school information personnel face in grades K-12. Explores the role of the information specialist in facilitating ethical, legal and social information challenges by reflecting the needs of teachers and students. Aids in understanding the broader implications in the school environment and society as they relate to education.

ECDN 5730 – Field Experience Pedagogy Assessment capstone course

This course is offered through Seattle Pacific University.

3 credits, offered fall, winter, and spring quarters

Field Experience is a candidate’s opportunity to demonstrate skill in the new subject area. The candidate will locate a classroom appropriate to his/her endorsement and with the support of a mentor teacher, the candidate will teach a unit of study. (At least one lesson period per day for 5-10 days.) An Seattle Pacific University supervisor will observe several of the candidate’s lessons and provide pedagogical guidance throughout the process.

The course also involves the creation of a portfolio to display the knowledge and skills gained in the new endorsement area, as well as to document the candidate’s ability to make a positive impact on learning in the new content area.

Recommended Elective

Credits do not apply towards the Endorsement.

ENGL 122 – Intro. to Children’s Literature

Survey of children’s literature from a variety of world cultures, including both oral and written traditions such as fairy tales, fantasy, picture books, novels and poetry. Examination of literary, psychological, educational and cultural influences and contexts.
